Good Bye, Mike Nolan. And Good Riddance…

good-bye-mike-nolan-and-good-riddance

Mike Nolan needed to go. Last year he made it pretty evident he had no idea what he was doing when he straight BOTCHED the circumstances surrounding Alex Smith’s shoulder injury. To make matters worse, he blamed it on Alex and was like “you aren’t tough enough”. You’re right Mike. I tore all of the ligaments in my throwing shoulder and my arm is barely hanging on to my body. and I go out there and try to throw the ball, but can’t. But you’re right, I’m not tough enough. I told you guys after Week 4 last year that Alex should be done for the season because there was no way he could come back from that injury. Instead, Nolan wants to run him back out there. Then all of a sudden, people are like “Alex Smith is terrible. He’s a bust”. He can’t throw because his damn arm is hanging off his body!

To make it even worse is the fact that Nolan, real talk, spent more time trying to coordinate what he was wearing on the sidelines than he did actually trying to put a competitive team together to take pressure off Mike Nolan, former San Franisco 49ers head coach.Frank Gore. I mean seriously, how can you get behind a guy that wears suits made by Reebok? Not a Brooks Brothers suit. A Reebok suit.

Then this year, he brings in Mike Martz. He gives Martz complete control over the offense. He doesn’t say “make sure you make the focal point Frank Gore”. Hell No! He doesn’t say “if the guy isn’t open down field, you have Vernon Davis that we’ll keep close by. He an make things happen”. Hell no! He’s trying to make this team win on the arm of…… JT O’Fuckin’ Sullivan.  The dude has been a career journeyman for a reason. He’s been on 6 or 7 teams for a reason. JT has no respect or regard for even TRYING to protect the ball. He just throws the ball out there knowing damn well he doesn’t have arm strength to fit some of those passes in the areas he’s putting them in. Not only that, but the offense is predicated on throwing to a spot. But you’re supposed to not throw to that spot when there is a defender there.. He does it all the time. And for how bad his decision making is on throws, him actually holding on to the ball is even worse. I’ve lost count of how many times this dude has fumbled.  It never fails. When you look at his stat line, it usually has AT LEAST 1 fumble and 1 interception listed next to it. You just can’t afford to be that high risk.

I caught part of what Chris Berman was saying, but here is the thing. When Nolan took over, he was given UNPRECEDENTED power for a first time head coach. Did you guys know that when he walked through the door that Nolan was the Head Coach AND General Manager? Yep. He was the top dog. And honestly, he may have had some Vice President duties. In short, the only person he had to answer to up until this past off season was the owner. They took that power away from him after last year. So I don’t want to hear this stuff about he inherited a bad team. We all know that. But he was given complete control and he is the one that was making dumb ass decisions, coaching and in the front office.

For Mike Nolan, I honestly feel he may end up coaching the Raiders next year.  The team is still in the area.  They will be in the market for a head coach and Mike will be desperate enough to take any job.  Believer me, simply coaching for the Raiders is desperate.  This is what Mike Nolan is.

As far as the 49ers are concerned, if Mike Singletary does not work out, look for Mike Holmgren to be the new head coach of the team.  Remember, he got his start as a member of Bill Walsh’s staff.  He’s from San Francisco.  He used to be a teacher in San Francisco.  His contract is up with Seattle at the end of the year and Jim Mora Jr. takes over.  Holmgren also just happens to be building a house in San Francisco as you read this.

Food for thought.

Parade Rain-er On-ers?

With all the talk of BYU or Utah getting into the BCS and the countdown to their possible top 10 undfeated end of the season matchup in full swing I think that people are forgetting about TCU.  The Cougars travel to Ft. Worth to take on TCU tonight 8pm ET on Versus.  So, do the horned frogs put an end to the cougs dream season?  If BYU wins tonight what about TCU over Utah 11/6 in Salt Lake?  I don’t know why but my gut tells me that TCU is going to beat one of these guys.

The future in your frontin’?

So, with the NBA Pre-Season officially underway there were a few things right off the bat that caught my attention that I had to speak on. Greg Oden played his first game last night, and while I didn’t see who was on him while he was in the game, he didn’t look half bad. He had the basic 1st year center offense; get good deep position down low, use good footwork, gather yourself, dunk. The same thing we saw from

Shaq/Dwight/Bynum. Par for the course for Centers now days. This is important in my view because by contrast I also saw Andrew Bynum who looked EXTREMELY impressive. It’s easy to see he put in a lot of work for the second straight off-season and it is showing in his game. He’s going to have a monster year. He was confident. Had a lot of energy. And is straight chiseled. It made me laugh because I remember his rookie year when he was this doughy round faced kid who looked happy to be on the court. Remember when Shaq tip dunked all over his back and he took offense and came down the next possession and dunked on Shaq and got all excited, then Shaq threw him a ‘bow? That was straight comedy. He doesn’t even look like the same person from back then. But alas, the reason I say this is important, in relation to Oden is because; barring injury, with Oden, Howard, and Bynum all in the league, peaking at a young age, what we have in the makings is this generation’s Hakeem/Ewing/David Robinson. We already know what Superman can do. Like I said, Bynum is set to break out, and I think what is going to happen with Oden is he’s not going to have a choice but to be great. If he has any kind of competitive nature, with Bynum being in the same conference AND division, they will push each other year after year. We’ve already seen that Bynum has the work ethic to be a dominant player. Oden is not going to take kindly to being dominated and dunked on, and will turn his game up a notch to match. And it will go like that for years to come. In my opinion this is good for the NBA as they continue to try and reshape the image of the league. As we saw last year they are working hard on marketing guys who paint the league in a good light. Tolerance for idiotic behavior is at an all-time low. And the black eye that is the Tim Donaghy scandal still looms over the league coming into the season as every time a call is blown, or a game is in question, there will be eyebrows raised as to whether or not there is an ulterior motive. What better way to shift focus away from the black marks on the league than to embrace what could be your future big man rivalries for the next 10-12 years? This is why I feel the maturation and play of Oden in the pre-season is vital. The more comfortable and confident he is, the better he will play. Now if we can ensure that Bynum and Gasol can co-exist so that we don’t see a Josh Howard for Bynum trade, I think these should be exciting times. Now lets not get ahead of ourselves. Both of these dudes are going to get murked by Yao for a good 3 years. But just like Shaq did to Hakeem and David, once they get over that hump, they are SNATCHING the title of dominant big man out of Yao’s grasp. And then my friend, it will be as Tick says, on like neckbone.

Poor Sportsmanship?

BEIJING — Cuba’s Angel Matos deliberately kicked a referee square in the face after he was disqualified in a bronze-medal match, prompting the World Taekwondo Federation to recommend that he be banned for life.

“We didn’t expect anything like what you have witnessed to occur,” said WTF secretary general Yang Jin-suk. “I am at a loss for words.”

Yang also recommended Matos’ coach be banned. Matos was winning 3-2, with 1:02 left in the second round, when he fell to the mat after being hit by his opponent, Kazakhstan’s Arman Chilmanov. Matos was

sitting there, awaiting medical attention, when he was disqualified for taking too much injury time. Fighters get one minute, and Matos was disqualified when his time ran out. Matos angrily questioned the call, pushed a judge, then pushed and kicked referee Chakir Chelbat of Sweden, who required stitches in his lip. Matos spat on the floor and was escorted out. “This is an insult to the Olympic vision, an insult to the spirit of taekwondo and, in my opinion, an insult to mankind,” Yang said. Matos’ coach was unapologetic. “He was

too strict,” Leudis Gonzalez said, referring to the decision to disqualify Matos. Afterward, he charged the match was fixed, accusing the Kazakhs of offering him money.

Angel Valodia Matos

Although the arena announcer said Matos and his coach were banned effective immediately, Yang said due process must be followed before officially banning the two. In his first match, Matos defeated Italy’s Leonardo Basile, then beat China’s Liu Xiaobo 2-1 in the quarterfinals. But he

lost to South Korean Cha Dong-min in the semis to land in the bronze-medal match. “To me it was obvious

he was unable to continue,” Chilmanov said. “His toe on his left foot was broken.” But Chilmanov added: “Rules are rules. I’m happy with my medal.” Matos won the gold medal in this division — the men’s over 80-kilograms (176 pounds) — at the 2000 Sydney Games, dedicating the victory to his mother, who died on the day of the opening ceremony. At

the 2004 Athens Games, he finished 11th. Matos’ bad behavior followed a day of confusion on the mats and ended the four-day taekwondo competition, which was marred by several protests against judge’s calls. Earlier Saturday, China’s double gold medalist Chen Zhong crashed out in the quarterfinals after initially being declared the winner. World champion Maria del Rosario Espinoza, the eventual winner in the women’s over 67-kilogram (147.4 pounds) class, was to fight Chen in the semifinals but the judges overturned an earlier ruling and made Britain’s Sarah Stevenson the winner of the quarterfinal bout in which Chen scored in the closing seconds of the second round and then Stevenson tagged her with a head kick — worth two points — in the third.

The judges ruled Stevenson’s kick wasn’t solid enough for points, and Chen was declared the winner 1-0. After Britain protested, the result was changed to put Stevenson in the semifinal.

The decision brought loud jeers from the crowd. China did not appeal.

It was the first time a match result has been overturned since taekwondo became an official Olympic sport in 1990.

“It’s been a really tough day, an emotional roller coaster,” Stevenson said. “I would have been devastated if they hadn’t changed the decision.”
